Transcription keeps showing up on every "work from home with no experience" list. So let's actually dig into the two most recommended beginner platforms — Rev and Scribie and give you the real numbers so you can decide if it's worth your time.

What is transcription, exactly?

You listen to audio or video files and type out exactly what is said. That's it. You need a computer, internet, and decent ears. No degree, no resume, no startup cost.

Rev is the most well-known transcription platform and for good reason — they have a steady flow of work and pay weekly via PayPal.

What they pay: Transcriptionists earn $0.30 to $1.10 per audio minute. Captioners earn $0.54 to $1.10 per audio minute. There is a catch: audio minutes are not the same as working minutes. A 60-minute file can take 3-4 hours if the audio is messy.

Realistic earnings: The average transcriptionist who completes 15 jobs can earn $156 per month. Some people make more, but go in with realistic expectations.

How to get in: You take a grammar quiz, record a short video in English talking about a movie you like, and submit a sample transcription.

The good stuff:

  • Work whenever you want, as much or as little as you want

  • No minimum hours

  • Paid every week without fail

  • You can also do captioning (slightly higher pay) and subtitling (highest pay at $1.50-$3.00 per audio minute if you speak another language)

Tips to actually make money on Rev:

  • Start with SHORT files while you learn — don't grab a 2-hour interview your first week

  • Pick clean audio files — you can preview before claiming

  • Build your speed and accuracy over time, better ratings = access to better paying files

  • Captioning pays more than transcription — apply for that too

Rev is not going to replace your income but it is real money that hits your PayPal every week with zero startup cost and zero commute. If you have an hour at night after the kids go down or a quiet afternoon, it is worth applying just to have it in your back pocket.

Next issue we are diving into another transcription company, the easier entry point with a different pay structure and a learning curve that actually works in your favor. Stay tuned.
